Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of Victoria

 Jim Craig Memorial Championship Show

Sunday 10th & Monday 11th March 2002

JUDGE: Mrs Clare Lee (Constones) UK

I would like to thank whole-heartedly, the Victorian Club for giving me this wonderful opportunity to judge at this special show. I know that organising a show covering one day is hard enough - the effort that must have gone into running a two day Show is something else!

Everyone was so hospitable - Lynne who most kindly left her Doberman litter to meet us at the Airport, Winton who ferried us back and forwards from the motel and generally looked after us during the day; the committee who had everything to hand; my lovely stewards - Mick and Ross - who always kept things light hearted even when the going got hot, and the canteen girls who put on such a splendid spread for us on both days.

It was terrific fun meeting Helen Craig and being able to reminisce about some of the older fanciers in the UK. Most of all, the biggest thank-you must go to the exhibitors. The quality of the animals was definitely superior to when I judged in Australia before. This made the job hard at times but all the more exciting.

Some judges, I know, look for the biggest entry as being something to pray for, but my one plea is "please let there be some good animals" - this day my prayers were answered. The Show Ground you have here in conjunction with the permanent buildings are superb - you just don't know how lucky you are! Come to the UK and see what we have to put up with most of the time!

Baby Dog Baby Bitch
These 'baby' classes are not scheduled in the UK. I have mixed views on their value. In the first place it must be said that they are excellent training grounds for the pups - even those that may not go on to have busy show careers can benefit from the socializing aspect of these classes.

On the other hand, I cannot take the placings too seriously. Puppies are notorious for changing with the wind - doggy stories of the ugly duckling at three months that grew into a beautiful swan at nine, abound. All that one can say is that whilst many things like rib, skull, stop can definitely change over the months a few points will not improve - or only slightly. First of these are the very poorly boned, hare-footed pups who will really have to go some to come right and next is the ultra-fine foreface (the sort that looks like it has been through a pencil sharpener) and this will not get much better even the development of the skull will improve the overall look of the head.

I felt torn between the need to give proper attention to all the babies whilst at the same time worried about the length of time they were in the ring - I hope i got the balance right.

1. Boldhart Oliver Red Coat (Pink)
Fine up-standing puppy. Head developing nicely, good expression, good bone, straight front, level top line, good bend of stifle. Just about all you could hope for in a pup of this age. Expertly handled by this young handler. For my personal preference I hope the smut parts of his coat soon clear completely from this otherwise highly desirable deep red coat.

2. Boldhart Ready Foraction (O'Neill)
Up-standing brindle pup. Good head - nice ratio of foreface to skull, good expression, dark eye. Level top line. See he is a brother of No 1.

3. Shellray Mischief Maker (Spark)
Mahogany Brindle. Wide, strong foreface. Good bone, short coupled body. At this stage his ears look big - but this picture can surely change as his head develops

4. Boldhart Allover Red Rova (Baxter)

5. Gravehart Mystery Man (Graves)

On reading the catalogue I find that three of my first four placings were from the same litter - well I suppose that must show the type of puppy I am looking for and I rather naturally congratulate the breeder of this litter.

1. Powerpaws Shining Caddie (Powerpaws)
I felt that if I was buying a baby puppy on the day, then this would be where I would put my money. Her head shape, strength and width of underjaw, round widely placed eye, correctly positioned rose ears are the first things to grab you. You can work on a puppies body and feet but you cannot make a good head out of a bad one. She has very good bone, a nice front, good bend of stifle - the rest is in the lap of the gods.

2. Boldhart Fancythis N Fancythat (Wolf)
Lovely little red girl. Good head of correct shape. Nice eyes, ears need to tidy up - but time will improve these. Well put together body and nicely bent stifles. Very promising.

3. Stafflyte Skys The Limit (Wylie)
More mature baby. Nicely shaped head, good eye and ear. Nice front and well off for bone. Feet should tighten up as she gets older. Well bent stifle and strong top line.

4. Stafflyte Special Quest (Naporowski)

5. Riverhaven Rippa Rita (Lipyeat)

Minor Dog Minor Bitch

1. Borstaff Snedrick Crumbb (Szirer)
I said I prayed for some good specimens and I must admit when I clapped my eyes in this one I felt straight away I was going to have a good day. This is the sort of puppy that makes you sit up and take notice. Firstly, he has presence in the ring - coming of course from his excellent balance and tight construction. His headpiece is the correct shape - deep and strong with pronounced stop, round eye and well placed rose ears. Then the strong neck leads into clean shoulders, good bone, while his pasterns are strong and feet a good size but closely knuckled up. He has an excellent top line. Enough rib for his age, good bend of stifle and he moved well. He is up to size but I get the felling he has finished going upwards and will just need maturity now to be the finished article. I predict an excellent future for this youngster.

2. Sevilara Rosies Rascal (Sevilara)
Nice headed young brindle, although not as clean in outline as No 1. Very short coupled body. Good rib and neat feet. Unlucky to meet one besides whom, at this stage he seemed a little stuffy. Time will tell how he tightens up however.

3. Arlian Buket Ovino (Peggie)
Brindle with correct expression - coming from his well defined, short, strong head and round, if somewhat light eye. He has good bone and excellent rib development for his age.

4. Jenrana Acid Rain (Jennings)

5. Mosstrooper Talk Memphis (Consadine)

1. Newgen Wish Me Luck (Newgen)
Neatly made young brindle. Good strong and well shaped head, nice stop, dark round eyes. Good bone, nice front and squarely built, short coupled body. Nice bend of stifle and for her age moved well.

2. Borstaff Bramble Tart (Bacastaff)
Black brindle with a really correct expression - good head shape and dark round eye correctly placed in the skull. Good front and rib. Feet need attention and she didn't really make the most of herself in the ring

3. Pitstaff Dark Diamond (Brown)
Clean cut youngster with a good shaped head and correct expression. Unfortunately unwilling to use her ears on the day and good ears do set the whole thing off to the best advantage. Well made body, enough bone which is straight and true. Enough rib for age.

4. Sevilara Ziggy Star Dust (Sevilara)

5. Mishmax Sweet Satine (Griffiths)

Puppy Dog Puppy Bitch

1. Linwest Thunderstruck (Lindsey)
Red pied. Very typey young dog. Very good head piece - short and deep, correct ratios of foreface and skull, pronounced stop and round well set eyes. Good quality of bone. Well balanced body, level top line. A bit straight in stifle but did not affect his movement. A good prospect.

2. Mishmax Little Gladiator (Peggie)

Black Brinde. Very good expression coming from his round eye set in a well defined head. The smallest of rose ears which sets the head and expression off to the best advantage. Very clean front, enough bone, neat feet. He moved well and kept his level top line on the move.

3. Chablakmor Private Ryan (Mortimer)

Black brindle with a very good head piece, nice rib, enough bone. Just didn't move as true as 1 or 2 on the day.

4. Mitipe Buz Lightyear (Brooker)

5. Neworder Heavy Tar (Marsh)

1. Linwest Sunni (Pearce)
Very typey white bitch - sister I discovered of my Puppy Dog winner. Excellent head, well defined stop, good skull, deep wide foreface. Excellent pigmentation of nose and lips. Correctly placed ears and round eyes. Very clean, well muscled, but no way over done shoulders. Good sized well padded feet. Good spring of rob for age. Well bent stifle and time to tighten up muscle tone. Promising young bitch. B
est Puppy In Show

2. Seighford Twinkletoes (Gadsby)
Very clean cut black brindle. Good skull, stop and nice expression. Ears a little large at this stage and foreface not quite as strong as 1. Enough bone, good rib for age, level topline and moved well. Another youngster to watch.

3. Linwest Pipedreams (Spicer)
Good headed red with correct stop, round eyes and neat rose ears. Very good rib and short coupled body. Would like a bit more lift to her, but she may have some growing left.

4. Stafface Kutabove (Mitchell)

5. Truhaven Dark Angel (Macklin)

Junior Dog Junior Bitch

1. Ch Powerpaws Beyond Thelaw (Powerpaws)
Pied with unfortunate spotting which tends to detract from the dog's virtues. Very good head - pronounced stop, strong short foreface of the correct proportions although slightly marred by excess flews. Well placed neat rose ears. Good clean front, nice bone, good depth of brisket and well sprung rib. Well developed back-end and moved with drive.

2. Likalot Born To Be Wild (Livingstone)
Excellent headed dog although of a heavier type than 1. Very good definition to the head and good stop. Very wide front and strong, but clean bone. A bit heavy on shoulder which spoils outline. Good spring of rib, strong hind quarters.

3. Jamelkur All Revd Up (Birkeland)
Black brindle. Fair head - nice, but not as good as 1 or 2. Good dark eye and nicely placed and set ears. Good front, nice depth of brisket. A very compact, short coupled dog. I note he is by the same sire as my second place winner.

4. Faemount Fife N Drum (Oats)

5. Truhart Dark Vincent (Truhart)

1. Likalot Blazing Amazon (Livingstone)
Brindle - so nice incidentally to see so many true brindles as we see very few in the UK where black and black brindle predominate. Very lovely expression on this bitch from her good stop and dark eye. Clean, well boned front, strong well padded feet. Good top line, nice rib cage. Good bend of stifle, moved well.

2. Keltarjess Shanis Girl (O'Brien)
Very strong headed brindle. Well set, rose ears. Good bone, strong feet. Enough rib, good hind quarters. A shade longer than 1 and very lethargic on the day.

3. Linwest Bitter Sweet (Holahan)
Very nice expression on this bitch. Clean front, good shoulders, nicely boned. A bit long cast. Excellent quality of coat i.e. short and very close to skin.

4. Koendidda Gigglepot (Schelfhorst)

5. Faemount Fatal Attraction (Egglestone)

Intermediate Dog Intermediate Bitch

1. Appleyard Basil Beau (Gogerly)
Smart looking brindle with white markings. A well balanced animal is the first thing that struck me. Very good head piece - short, deep and strong. Good cheek bumps, well defined stop, round well placed dark eyes and all topped off by well placed rose ears. Good width of front and depth of brisket. Enough bone. Well sprung rib, level top line, strong neck, well tucked up waist, strong hind-quarters with well bent stifles. RES CC.

2. Koendidda Kool Mint (Schelfhorst)
Strong headed pied. Good definition of stop, good cheek bumps and eye placement first class. Neat ears. Good clean front. Well defined body. A little straight in stifle.

3. Joelena Sams Thunder (Brien)
Red pied dog of some strength. Very good head, bone and rib. Not quite as clean cut as winner.

4. Landaulad Like Lightning (Pedler)

5. Bajed Eye Open (Dawes)

1. Linwest Good Golly (Lindsey)
Most appealing black brindle with white chest and feet. Such a lovely head piece - short, strong and deep. Great depth of foreface, well pronounced stop, round dark eye and correctly placed rose ears - and all this whilst still looking feminine. And this is because of the expression and the balance of her head size with her body. Strong neck of correct length, clean shoulders, good bone and feet. Good depth of brisket and well sprung ribs. Not the neatest of waists. Moved well.

2. Borstaff Lollapalooza (Szirer)
Close run thing this. Very good headed bitch, nice stop, round eyes. Good clean front with well laid shoulders. Good weight of bone for a bitch. Level top line. Would like more definition in body and more drive on the move.

3. Triffstaff Tattletale (Lynch)N
Nice type of bitch. Much to admire in the head and expression. OK for bone, short coupled body with nice spring of rib. Back alright but did not move true in the front.

4. Jenrana All That Jazz (Jennings)

5. Ch Jehard Aint She Sweet (Wood)

Graduate Dog Graduate Bitch

1. Linwest Bulldoza (Lindsey)
Upstanding, clear red dog of substance. Well shaped head. Strong deep foreface. Defined stop, round dark eye. Well placed ears. Strong neck leading to clean shoulders. Good bone and fair feet. Level top line, good depth of brisket and spring of rib. Well bent stifle.

2. Stafflyte Gaelic Force (Gibaud)
Very good headed brindle with white markings. Good stop, strong foreface, round eye, nicely developed cheek bumps. Nice width of front, good bone and feet. A little less weight on the waistline would improve the body definition.

3. Linwest Heza Bobby (Lindsey)
Lovely expression on this brindle, coming from the eye placement and shape. Good clean front, enough bone, good spring of rib. Fell away a bit at the croup.

4. Powerpaws The Heat Is On (Gentlerock)

5. Seighford Obeeone (Wilson)

5. Boldhart Booker Noe (Boyle)

1. Mosstrooper Mexicali Rose (Lindsey)
Brindle with white markings. Compact bitch with grand head piece - good stop, strong and deep throughout, round eye giving the correct expression. Rose ears. Clean front and good bone with well padded feet. Level top line and good spring of rib. Well defined hindquarters and went well.

2. Boldhart Miss Moneypenny (Baxter)
Fair headed brindle with slightly lighter eye than 1. Very good bone, nice tuck up at waist, good spring of rib. Moved well.

3. Diamondstaff Jasmine (Morse)
Black brindle with a nicely proportioned head, although not quite as strong as those above. Good bone, front could be a bit wider. Level top line, fair spring of rib. In general her body could do with more definition.

4. Zilgen Red Alert (Sullivan)

5. Boldhart Simplyiresistbl (Pink)

Limit Dog Limit Bitch

1. Boldhart Dudley Dooright (Brooker)
Substantially built, nice true coloured brindle with a good head piece, well placed ears, good round eyes. Excelled in strength of bone, wide front, very good spring of rib. Moved well. Unfortunate habit of standing pin-toed rather detracted from the overall picture.

2. Bajed Yamaha (Dawes)
Brindle with a good head, although I would have preferred a less dominant eye. Good bone, nice front, level top line. Moved well. A little longer cast than 1.

3. Boldhart Berlington Berti (Seuren)
Black brindle dog with an excellent head shape, although a little bit lippy. Good rib, bone and top line. Best of all, he moved correctly.

4. Enroche Impreshn I Get (Enroche)

5. Novastaff Red Hot Rebus (Daelish)

1. Triffstaff Rosy Bump (Enroche)
Good type of brindle. This bitch has a very good head: correct proportions of foreface to skull, good stop, round eye. Well placed ears. Good width of chest, strong bone, well padded feet. Good depth of brisket and well sprung ribs, going up to well defined waist. Good bend of stifle.

2. Boldhart Truly Scrumchs (Seuren)
Larger sized mahogany brindle. Very typet head and a most alert expression. Rather heavily made front. Good bone and strong well padded feet. Good spring of rib. Moved OK behind but not as cleanly at front.

3. Jehard Last Love (Lindsey)
Lovely clear colour red. Nice head shape with good proportions and good dark eye. Nicely ribbed body with well defined waist and strong hind quarters. Somewhat bossy shoulders mars the ideal picture.

4. Borstaff Burls Gurl (Szirer)

5. Powerpaws Ice Carving (Powerpaws)

Australian Bred Dog Australian Bred Bitch

1. Ch Boldhart Mo Macakie (Baxter)
Here again was an excellent mover - in fact I noticed that this kennels was one of the few who consistently sent forward animals that could move correctly coming and going as well as in those circles of yours! His movement came from his excellent, tight construction. Clean, well laid shoulders, good bone and well padded neat but not too small feet. His top line is level he has good spring of rib and depth of brisket. Well muscled and well bent stifles. Skull is very good, being in correct balance with his overall size. I would prefer his eyes a little wider set and a wee bit more depth in foreface but an excellent dog none the less and he had strong competition in his class.

2. Gr Ch Ourgang Hell For Leather (Wolf)
Lovely shaped head on this dog. Well placed rose ears, round eye. Good strong neck although front slightly tied. Good spring of rib and defined waist. Not a good a mover as 1.

3. Ch Cosmicstaff Glory Bound (Doobagg)
Very compact, well balanced dog. Lovely head shape with ears to set it off. Good clean front, nice spring of rib and well tucked up at the belly. Short coupled body - I would like stronger hind quarters

4. Ch Vagastaff High N Mighty (Dart)

5. Solidblack Billys Boy (Graves)

1. Jenrana Ebonyanivory (Jennings)
Eye catching brindle pied. Lovely head: short and deep throughout; she has a correct stop, good ratio of foreface to skull, round dark and correctly placed eyes, well placed ears that could in fact be a bit tidier. She has all the same attributes of head as my male winner but smaller to balance with her smaller frame - thus she has strength of head while still looking feminine. Good shoulder placement leading to well boned, straight front legs and well padded feet. Her brisket deceives the eye because of the white at the bottom - in fact she has correct depth of brisket. Good spring of rib, short coupling, level top line she moved true fore and aft. A picture of strength with agility, which is what a blend of Bull and Terrier should be. CC & RUBIS, BOS

2. Stoneheart Bonny McGinty (Trimble)
Brindle with a good head. Although not quite the definition of 1. Good bone and excellent spring of rib. Level top line. Very clean, wide front and well bent stifle.

3. Ch Boldhart Red By Request (Baxter)
Difficult decision this one. A very strong bitch with a good wide head, which for me is somewhat masculine in expression. Good bone, strong well padded feet. Level top line and well bent stifle. In excellent condition, moved very well.

4. Stoneheart Simple Pride (Milner)

5. Pitstaff Barly Korn (Jenks)

Open Dog Open Bitch

1. Ch Highbourne Luskin Star (Frazer)
A star for me today. Excellent head: Short, deep throughout, good stop, round eye, correct length of foreface to skull. Strong foreface, good bite. His well laid shoulders gave him correct width of front and his strong pasterns allowed him to stand up straight and true. Short coupled body, level top line. Good bend of stifle and good width to his hind quarters. Moved OK. On the day this dog showed more than any other that rare blend of strength without coarseness. His alert stance and tight construction pronouncing him a force to be reckoned with.
CC & BEST IN SHOW

2. Ch Chablakmor The Renegade (Austin-Cleary)
Another strong headed dog with all the ingredients to make one look twice. Not quite as clean all round as 1. Good bone and correct front. Level top line, good spring of rib.

3. Ch Cherabah Ironside (Stanley)
Very clean cut black brindle. Good bone and level top line, well muscled. A most balanced animal. Good skull, nice stop, good eye and ear placement. Not quite the strength of foreface of the two above. Completed a trio of very fine animals, I was lucky to have the opportunity of examining - Thank You.

4. Ch Leatherwood Dare Devil (Appleby)

5. Ch Solidrock In Like Flynn (Lindsey)

1. Ch Truhaven Red Obsession (Truhaven)
Top size red bitch. Very good head shape - deep throughout and good strong foreface without wrinkle or lip. Clean shoulders, good bone and well padded feet. Good spring of rib, nice tuck up. Well bent stifle. I would have like a more level topline, but un-like more than half her class mates she moved correctly behind - i.e. she was not cow hocked. RES CC

2. Ch Hotrox Caught Inth Act (Hotrox)
Brindle. Won her place mainly on the high quality of her head shape and definition. In addition she has a good front, well padded feet, good spring of rib and well bent stifle. Moved OK.

3. Ch Highbourne Mummys Pet (Frazer)
Dam of my dog winner and, with no disrespect to his sire, anyone doubting the importance of having a quality bitch to breed with should look at her and her son. Very good head piece - all the neccessary definition and ratios to make it correct plus the ideal cleanliness and lack of loose flesh or wrinkle. Very good front and bone. Well laid shoulders. Good feet. Nice spring of rib and excellent tuck up at waist. Good strong top line. Wish she could have moved a little truer behind.

4. Eastaff The Oulton Broad (Consadine)

5. Ch Chablakmor Rip Snorter (Mortimer)
